State of emergency in Newfoundland

Heavy rains in the community of Stephenville, Western Newfoundland, caused the waters of two rivers to breach their banks, flooding the town. 200 of the 8000 residents had to evacuate their homes. According to Environment Canada, the rains were unrelated to Hurricane Rita. (link)

About 200 homes were flooded by water that, in some places, reached up to the kitchen windows. Even though the rain kept falling, the mayor said that the flooding would remain limited to the low-lying areas already under water.

The rapidly rising water engulfed vehicles and washed away roads leading to the three bridges in Stephenville. The spans themselves were undamaged.

With reports of damage extending to the neighbouring communities of Noels Pond, Black Duck Siding and Kippens, police were restricting traffic and asking drivers to stay off the roads. (link)

The municipal vote was yesterday as well, and polling stations had to close. The vote will be rescheduled. The Premier toured the area late Tuesday, and the PM has offered assistance.
