I've always been fascinated by starfishes and their regenerative abilities, but I don't think I've ever gotten such a good look at the underbelly of one before. Cool. :)
deferred gratification is a myth. It doesn't exist and it never has. But since you are shortly to suffer the vicissitudes of air travel, I'll guess I try for a little patience.
Olivia, First of all, I posted first. Second of all, your post is amazing. What a coincidence that we both posted stars at almost the same time. Our difference is that I don`t have any butts to show. I`m glad you took some tank pix. Isn`t it a thrill.
Starfish digestion is carried out in two stomachs: the cardiac stomach and the pyloric stomach. The cardiac stomach is a sack like stomach located at the center of the body and may be everted out of the organism's body to engulf and digest food. Some species are able to use their water vascular systems to force open the shells of bivalve mollusks such as clams and mussels by injecting their stomachs into the shells. With the stomach inserted inside the shell, the starfish is able to digest the mollusk in place. The cardiac stomach is then brought back inside the body, and the partially digested food is moved to the pyloric stomach. Further digestion occurs in the intestine. Waste is either excreted through the anus on the aboral side of the body, or excreted through the mouth if the anus is absent as in brittle stars. [LINK]
I stared and stared at that sloth before reading what it is. I thought it was a woman's wig. I thought, "Why is Olivia showing us a photo of a wig? Was it part of an art show?"
LOL FM ... I'll have to remember that and make sure to have one (sloth butt pic) handy for those occasions where something grand is needed to pull off a big finish ... ;-)

Umm, I don't want to provide redundant data points but I do feel compelled to observe that these are not mountains.
(Though I should also make it clear that I am in not, in any way, denigrating the splendor that is sloth butts.)
Hi Olivia and Andi.
Sloth butt!!! Oh boy, Oh boy, Oh boy!
We've finally hit a level of refinement I can identify with. :)
Morning Olivia. This was definitely an OMG moment! What beautiful IBs the starfish has! I had no idea.
And what can I say about Mr/Ms Sloth? Well, such beautiful long hair so tastefully arranged as to completely hide which end is up. Great shot.

LOL Andi!
I haven't had a chance to go through the photos yet ... Think of it as delayed gratification ... :P
Hi FM.
LOL ... we aim to please ... ;-)
Hi P4.
That was well put (sloth hair) -- I had a hard time figuring out which end was which when I had the live version over me ... lol
Hi Jen.
Yeah, they're pretty amazing -- and how courteous of a few of them to stick to the glass so close-ups were possible ... ha. :)

Heh ... :)
If you've ever read up on starfish, you'll know that from an oyster's POV, that's one scaaaaaarrrry photo!

Hi FAR.
This must be what you're referring to, heh:

Hi Head.
You win -- you were first -- and yours has that gorgeous colour and it's scarier looking w/ all the prickles.
Btw, do you remember Danger Bay? (see comment here: [LINK]).
LOL d ... if we're talking races, than a sloth wouldn't be the animal to win the race ... ;-)
I beg your pardon Olivia, but a a sloth's butt is a winner anywhere. ;)
That starfish is wearing sequins and pearls.
I stared and stared at that sloth before reading what it is. I thought it was a woman's wig. I thought, "Why is Olivia showing us a photo of a wig? Was it part of an art show?"
The texture of that starfish is just amazing, Olivia. And slth butt to boot!

Thanks b2 ... Like Nancy said, it looks like it's wearing pearls. :)
