Notes: 2007-07-14 Back garden from the pond tour Nikon D70s 18-200mm @22mm 1/60s ƒ4 iso200 orton Click image for larger view I'm interested in what you all think of the orton effect - do you find it hard to view?
That pic should help take that helps take your mind off 2 1/2 feet of snow.
Though this isn't an effect i particularly like (kind of makes me feel that my bifocals aren't working) I think the effect works for this picture because it helps build a sense of otherwordliness.
I don't know what the effect is either, but the picture is simply gorgeous. Not hard to view at all. I wish I was sipping coffee in that Adirondack chair.
From my pov it just makes the picture look more like a painting. I guess the key is in knowing when to use it? Your gifted instinct should certainly cover that. :)
I like the effect. It makes it look like one of those displays you often see in Chinese restaurants, where they paint on glass & backlight it, with a little light wheel to make the water "move."
I was looking for photos with green in them ... the b has been lacking green stuff lately. I find that if I look at the orton-ized photos too long I start to get slightly dizzy lol
Heh ... and I just got back from plowing my way through it -- I went out at lunch to attempt to take some new photos, but I couldn't get to the river as the snow banks are too high to climb over ... :)
Morning O. I'm such a stickler for focus and clarity that I don't think I like the Orton effect. It is especially hard to look through in the largest size. I also have astigmatism which may be a factor in my case.
I take it that the Orton effect is the "doubling" of the image?
Olivia, Farfetched has it down. Some of the lights he mentioned are very intricate with falling or flowing water while the scene rotates through. Beer companies put some beauties out. I`ll see if I can find some. The posted image is exactly like those kind of lights & I thought of them upon first seeing the post. I looking for my 3D glasses right now, to see what I can see. I think it would be much more dramatic if a focal point ( the waterfalls & immediate surroundings) were not effected. It would accentuate the main subject while also showing the complete scene. I think it`s great that you tried that on this image, but I sure would like to see the original, which my mind tells me is terrific. I don`t think there`s anything wrong with the effect, but I think this image is not one I would use it on. If I haze my eyes though, I do see a beautiful photo. Olivia, I know it`s snowing up there & I hope This is not too much rain on your parade. I still love you.
Yeah ... seems to be people w/ eye things have problems viewing it, and as I mentioned above, the image makes me feel slightly motion sick after working on them ... lol .. Yep, it's basically layering a blurred image over an overexposed image.
Hey, remember when I was talking to you about taking waterfall shots -- this was the reason. I had these great shots from the pond tour, and you had said something about slowing down the shutter to get the curtain effect w/ the water -- If you remember, after that I went out practicing on any waterfalls I could find in ottawa until I figured out shutter speed ... :) I wish I had of known how to do that before the pond tour as it would have made the shots much nicer -- and the focus ... I agree w/ you on that. Maybe this one will be on the tour next year and I can get another try at it.

Morning Olivia.
I've never heard of that effect, but the picture is beautiful.

Hi there FM.
I've used it a couple times -- but not that often. I think it would be easy to get carried away though ... :)
Hi Andi.

Me too Beth!
My world has turned white and grey. I'm missing green and it's only the beginning of December -- another 3-4 more mos to go ... ack.
I saw over at your b that you're going to Mexico for Christmas ... Now that sounds nice ... :)
Hi Jen.
It does give it that bit of painterly / dreamy effect. I like that ... but I do notice the blurry sensation too.
It is easy to go overboard though ... When I first figured it out I was trying it on everything ... :)
Hi FAR.
I don't think I've ever seen that. Sounds neat ... esp w/ the moving water.

The picture of tranquility, Olivia. Do you go there often? It seems like a great place to relax.
Hi P4!

Hope your mouth has returned to normal ... ;)
LOL d ... I had already put you in the negative column, having had your feedback on the orton technique before ... :P
(Going to edit the post now ... :)

Hi b2 -- nope, it was one of the gardens on the pond tour this past year. It was an amazing space ... the owner put a lot of work into it.
Yes Olivia, I surely do remember, & you came back with some extraordinary shots. I remember that also.
Yikes ... just read that comment again and I meant to say great opportunities for shots from the pond tour ... oy. :)
